Karloma was formed in
1999 in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestine. The name of the
ensemble comes from the lexicon of Arabic calligraphy, and describes
the initial abstract sketches of the artist. These trial
illustrations and decorations may later be transformed into an
additional, original work of art, and may exceed the original
manuscript in terms of value and beauty.
Karloma toured Sweden in November 2005. As well as playing several
gigs in Gothenburg, Falun, Stockholm, Jonköping and Västervik, we
gave workshops to music students at Gothenburg University and other
music institutions. We also talked in forums, about our experience
living in Palestine, the musical and cultural life and the obstacles
Palestinians face every day from the occupation. We discussed our
experience as an ensemble made up of members from different national
and cultural backgrounds, and the opportunities this gives us and
our audiences for greater acceptance of human and artistic
diversity, dialogue and friendship. Our 2006 schedule included
concerts in Jordan and Norway.
We made our first CD in Palestine in 2001, and have also been
involved in another recording project in 2003, playing the works of
the Palestinian composer Suhail Khoury. Karloma's next CD is planned...return
soon for details of the CD and
upcoming concerts soon.
